Stanley Dean Porter, Jr (“Dean” to his friends and family) passed away, surrounded by loved ones, on July 14, 2026, at the age of 93.
Born in Cambridge, MA on January 12, 1933, he was the son of Stanley Dean Porter, Sr and Josephine Upham Porter. He is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Robert and John, his loving wife of 70 years Janet Pye Porter, and his son Keith Douglas Porter.
Dean graduated from Watertown High School and attended Wentworth Institute. He worked for many years with his family at Porter Construction in Watertown, where he was a vice president. He later founded Dean Equipment in Sudbury, a lawn & garden and heavy equipment sales and rental company.
He was a lifetime member of the Pilgrim Masonic Lodge, a member of the Bass River Rod and Gun Club, and a volunteer fireman for the Sudbury Fire Department and Princeton Fire Department. He was also a phenomenal brick mason and stone mason (one of the few of his generation who knew how to chisel a Lewis Key into heavy stones). You were lucky to have some of his masonry skills applied to your home or business!
An avid fisherman, Dean loved telling the story of the day he caught an enormous tuna in Cape Cod Bay and sharing stories of hunting trips in Maine with his family and friends. He proudly wore his Biggest Bucks in Maine patch He fell in love with flying at a young age, with his brother John, got his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying all over New England. He loved lobster meals. His daughter Kathy would send him beautiful feathers from the peacocks she raised, and he enjoyed gifting a feather to anyone who stopped by.
Dean will be missed by those who knew him but especially his family: son Stephen (wife Louise), daughter Kathy Reach (husband David), daughter Karen Shores, and son Dwight (wife Amy), as well as his sister Mary Gundersen, his grandchildren Dean, Travis, Nicole, Cristan, Wendie, Jacob, Kyle, Julia and Jessica, his great grandchildren Travis, Danica, Ryan, Thelonious, Fionna, Jackson, Fox, Sage, Kylie and Brooklyn, many nieces, nephews, cousins and his dear friend Mark Vamos.
A celebration of life is planned on September 19th with visitation starting at 11 am, concluding with a service at 1pm at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, 678 Main Street, Harwich. A private family burial will follow.

This year’s keynote speaker, Duncan Himmelman, PhD, will present “Great Native Plants for an Autumn Garden.” Himmelman will share native perennials, trees, and shrubs that can add fall color while providing late-season food for native bees, butterflies, and other insects before winter.
