MATTAPOISETT, Mass. — The town of Mattapoisett was struck by an EF-1 tornado on Tuesday morning as a line of strong storms hammered the region with damaging wind gusts, torrential rain, and lightning strikes.

Cars stranded on flooded roads, yards turned into lakes as storms bring torrential rain to Mass.

“A survey team confirmed a tornado in Mattapoisett around 11:30 a.m.,” the National Weather Service said in a tweet. “The survey team is still investigating the damage, and a more detailed statement on EF-rating, start & end times will be sent later today upon damage survey completion.”

Wind speeds are estimated to have hit 95 miles per hour while the tornado stayed on the ground for three minutes, picking up tree limbs and debris as it carved a nearly mile-long path through the town.

The tornado is estimated to have touched down at the intersection of Achusnet Street and Hereford Hill Road around 11:20 a.m., growing around 300 yards wide.

The NWS reports several large pines and Maple Trees were uprooted by the gusting winds, and some pines were snapped in half between 10 and 20 yards from their base.

“Very loud, very clear,” said Cheryl Mcguire of Mattapoisett.

Mcguire was working at home on Tinkham Lane. The pounding rain is what she noticed first, but then came a deafening roar.

“It sounded like a freight train was coming and I said ‘uh oh,’” she said.

Then she saw it. “I looked out the window and there was like a white cloud spinning,” said Mcguire.

She took her two dogs and ran for the basement as the twister ripped up more than a dozen big trees in her front yard.

“The trees were cracking and snapping. I have some big trees in my yard but they’re gone. You could hear them hitting the ground,” said Mcguire.

Video taken in the area of El Dorado Road, Hereford Hill Road, and Stoney Hill showed severe tree damage, branches littering the roadways, and damage to cars and homes.

Most of the damage was found along El Dorado Road by Graneda Court, the NWS says.

The line of storms led to multiple tornado warnings on Tuesday morning, including one with immense rotation in Bristol and Plymouth counties that ultimately lead to a tornado touchdown.

This comes after a confirmed tornado touched down along the Foxboro/Easton line in late July. Just days earlier, a tornado touched down in Dublin, New Hampshire, with maximum winds of 90-95 mph.

In mid-July, North Brookfield was also hit by a tornado that caused a quick burst of damage before dissipating.

“It’s just devastating to be honest. We are fortunate we cleared trees and got the bad ones out. It’s unimaginable to think it would happen here,” said Rochelle Correia, who lives two doors down the street from Mcguire.

Across town, residents were frightened as the tornado blew through Mattapoisett.

“I’m looking out my back windows as I’m going to my basement and I see things flying like really, really windy like scary windy,” said Marcia DuPont of Mattapoisett.

Mcguire says given the damage to all the trees she believes her late husband was watching over the neighborhood.

“Yeah, he passed away a year ago and I think he was looking down on us in the neighborhood and taking care of us. That’s what I like to think anyway because we were very lucky,” said Mcguire.

MATTAPOISETT - A small tornado was confirmed in Mattapoisett during Tuesday's storms.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning there around 11 a.m. The agency then sent a survey team to the town and confirmed "a tornado did take place" in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

Researchers inspected the damage and data to determine the tornado was an EF-1 rating and was on the ground for about three minutes. It lifted off the ground on North Street near Eldorado Drive.

There have been no reports of any serious injuries.

"Every time you get a warning it's nothing around here," said Marcia Dupont.

This time, that just wasn't the case. "It's getting darker and I was like let me listen outside," Dupont said. "It was not that loud train noise but to me there was a different noise out there, and I'm like this is not good."

Dupont said as debris started to hit her house, she went to find her cat. She snapped up her four-legged friend and bolted for cover.

"This is real, get out of here, even though you want to stand there and look at it," Dupont said.

As she hunkered in the garage, branches clanged off the roof and water began leaking through. "I got a hole in the roof like those people on TV! I am one of those people now," Dupont said.

She emerged to find power crews splitting trees apart, and power lines down across North Street. A giant tree smashed their neighbors' chicken coop.

Around the corner on Eldorado Drive, it's a roadblock of fallen trees.

"I told my boss, 'Hey I think a tornado just hit my house so I don't think I am going to be logging in anytime soon,'" said Dan Roellke.

Roellke watched out the window as a huge tree fell between on property, perfectly splitting a small opening between the garage and his home.

"It's like about two and a half feet in diameter, it's a giant tree, and we have been wanting to take it down," Roellke said. "Of course, Mother Nature took care of it for me."

Somehow it missed his pool and spared his two boats.

"If it was a honestly a like few feet to my right it would have went right into my mud room and smooshed me," Roellke said.

Another tornado touched down in Marstons Mills on Cape Cod Tuesday morning. The EF-0 tornado was on the ground for about four minutes.

On July 16, an EF-0 tornado with estimated winds of 80 mph touched down briefly in North Brookfield damaging trees in the area. It traveled about two miles.

On Saturday July 29, an EF-1 tornado with estimated maximum winds of 105 mph touched down in Foxboro near Easton and Mansfield. It lasted about 300 yards.

A total of three tornado warnings were issued during the torrential rain storms Tuesday, which left several roads flooded in eastern Massachusetts.

The tornado touched down at the intersection of Acushnet Road and Hereford Hill Road, and it lifted along North Street north of Eldorado Drive, all in Mattapoisett.

Significant damage was reported in the town.

Images posted on social media sites showed trees down across roads and tangled in power lines.

Hundreds remained without power Tuesday as crews worked to clean up the mess the tornado left behind.

Residents told NBC 10 News that they've never experienced anything like it.

“A lot of wind and a lot of rain and a lot of loud crashes,” said Ellie Correia.

“Trees down to street level, one house they had a huge tree went down right between the garage and the house,” Lynn Sylvia said. “No one hurt so far, so that's good.”

“It’s real with this changing environment. I guess you don' t know where it’s going to pop up. You don't expect it to pop up in your neighborhood, that's for sure,” said Marcia DuPont.

Eversource crews were working to get the power back on.

The Mattapoisett tornado follows a tornado that touched down along the Foxborough-Easton line on July 29.

Elsewhere in Southern New England, streets flooded in heavy downpours.

NBC 10 viewers used Chime in to share videos of streets underwater in Narragansett, Middletown and Newport.

Route 18 in New Bedford, which had been closed between Interstate 195 and Route 6 because of flooding, reopened at about 2:30 p.m.

Video shared with NBC 10 News through Chime in showed heavy downpours in Warwick and Woonsocket.

Storm Team 10 says we’ll see improvement by midday, but it will remain very muggy.

There’s a slight risk of a few popup thunderstorms later in the afternoon.

Dozens of Massachusetts communities were placed under tornado warnings on Tuesday amid widespread severe weather both in the Greater Boston area and around New England — and more severe weather is possible later in the week.

Two tornadoes touched down in the state Tuesday. The National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday afternoon that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Mattapoisett at 11:20 a.m. It was on the ground for three minutes, with winds estimated to be around 95 mph. It traveled for 0.9 miles and was as wide as 300 yards before it dissipated (or lifted off the ground).

Severe storms caused damage across Massachusetts Tuesday.

A second tornado, this one an EF-0, was also confirmed in Barnstable, near the Marstons Mills village. That tornado started around 11:52 a.m. and lasted around four minutes, with wind speeds around 80 mph and was about 1.1 miles long.

There have been four tornadoes in Massachusetts this year, bringing the total to nine in New England.

Thousands of people were left without power in the wake of the storm and cars were stranded in flood waters across the region.

The storms early Tuesday fed off sultry humidity, with dew point temperatures in the 70s. More storms were possible – albeit more scattered in nature – through the early evening.

By Tuesday night, as the scattered leftover storms and showers weaken, humid air will still be in place, but a new wind will start blowing from the west-northwest, starting a slow and steady flow of less humid air.

By Wednesday, the new air will be evident with sunshine and with a great feeling of pleasant air on a fresh breeze. This installment of pleasant air and fair weather will last into Thursday, until the next disturbance approaches New England from the west and is likely to spread new showers, rain and embedded thunder from west to east Thursday late day through night, departing Friday.

As of Tuesday, Thursday's storm threat didn't look as widespread nor as intense as Tuesday's in regards to flooding or tornadoes, but there could be some isolated severe storms with strong winds and/or torrential rain.

Great weather returns Friday and Saturday, then New England sets up a repetitive pattern of disturbances every two days or so, with a chance of scattered showers or thunder on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday of next week, though the air looks to remain seasonable with high temperatures each day at or over 80 degrees for many. The only wild card is if disturbances come closer in spacing, which would could result in a cooler day of clouds and showers somewhere in next week’s forecast, but right now we don’t see that as likely.

BOSTON – Communities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts experienced a wild Tuesday morning with flash flooding north of Boston and tornadoes reported along the southeast coast.

The National Weather Service office in Boston confirmed the tornadoes briefly touched in the town of Mattapoisett and Barnstable.

Photos from local emergency management officials showed several large Pine and Maple trees that were uprooted by the EF-1 twister with winds estimated to be around 95 mph around Mattapoisett.

METEOROLOGISTS CONFIRM EF-1 TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN IN SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE ON THURSDAY

According to the NWS, tornadoes are not a rarity in the state but are hardly a frequent occurrence.

During an average year, the state sees around three tornadoes, many of which are on the lower end of the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

The scale runs from an EF-0, which is considered to be the weakest of all tornadoes, to an EF-5, which has winds of at least 200 mph and is capable of incredible damage.

Tuesday’s tornadoes were the third and fourth reported in Massachusetts so far in 2023.

On July 16th, an EF-0 tornado touched down in the community of North Brookfield, and on July 29th, an EF-1 caused damage in Foxboro.

Meteorological summer is when the state typically sees its most tornadic activity and is when the deadliest tornado to impact New England rolled through more than five decades ago.

According to the NWS, an F-4 tornado flattened Worcester and surrounding communities on June 9, 1971, causing 94 fatalities and a 2023 damage equivalent of more than $500 million.

Tuesday’s storms triggered flooding and water rescues

Flooding was reported in communities north and west of Boston, as more than six inches of rainfall occurred in a period of only a few hours.

The highest rainfall tally was reported in Lawrence, and water rescues were witnessed in Cambridge and North Andover.

In Essex County, first responders reported a senior housing center with approximately 150 residents had to be evacuated due to high water.

And in Cambridge, firefighters responded to a vehicle that attempted to maneuver through too high of water in a flooded parking lot.

Due to rainfall rates of between 1-2" per hour, the NWS issued a Flash Flood Warning for more than half a dozen counties throughout Massachusetts, but as of Tuesday afternoon, many of the alerts were either canceled or expired.

There were no reported injuries associated with Tuesday’s wild weather, and most power was restored in the hours after the storms.
