PEMBROKE – It was just your standard wintertime cough. Until it wasn't.
What troubled Haleigh Borden over school vacation in December later turned into a trip to her pediatrician, then to Mass General for a litany of more serious tests, including a biopsy of the tissue in her neck.
In January, the Pembroke High senior was told the words no one ever wants to hear. Cancer ... Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Borden was diagnosed just two months before the start of her final season of high school softball.
“Just from a cough, I was not expecting that whatsoever," Borden said. "It was very, very shocking. Definitely not the news I was expecting. ... I was very worried about the season. The first week, maybe two weeks, was very emotional."
Between undergoing chemotherapy and lab check-ins to inspect her blood cell count, Borden, the Titans' starting catcher and lone senior, is still in uniform for the Pembroke High softball team. (Recently, she received good news from doctors that the treatment is going well).
Borden DH'd in the Titans' season-opener vs. Abington on March 28, then restarted her streak of starts behind the plate after tallying 22 in a row during the team's 14-8 season last spring, which featured a playoff win and a trip to the Division 3 Sweet Sixteen.
That first game without Borden in her normal position was... unusual.
“As a shortstop, I’m always listening for the catcher on every play," junior Amanda Graham said. "When I’m not hearing Haleigh’s voice, it’s just different. Every year I’ve been on varsity, she’s always been behind the plate.”
Breaking the news
Borden called head coach Brittany Noons and assistant coach Jordan McDermott after receiving word of her diagnosis on Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.
McDermott, the former head coach at Whitman-Hanson, had given Borden one-on-one catching and hitting lessons since early in the senior's childhood. Borden and her father then met McDermott for coffee at Starbucks in Brockton. That's when McDermott first saw the bandage on Borden's neck.
"I gave her a hug," McDermott said. "There were some tears. I gave her dad a hug."
“I was in shock, and feeling for her in that moment," Noons said of receiving the news. "I knew it was going to be hard and I couldn’t imagine how overwhelming it was for her to be going through it."
Borden, a four-year varsity player, was a mainstay at her position ever since Noons took over the program before last season. Around the time of her diagnosis, Borden had recently gotten a phone call from the coaching staff at Wentworth Institute of Technology. She was offered a roster spot.
Eagerly, Borden committed and decided on a civil engineering major.
Then her final high school season was put in jeopardy.
“Basically, my question was, do you want to continue to play softball or do you need to focus on yourself?” Noons said. “There was no doubt in her mind. This is where she wanted to be. She was going to give it everything she had.”
“My conversation with her is that I’m going to do everything I can to make it her best season," Noons said. "No matter what that means.”
Her first game back
When Borden suited up for the Titans' first game vs. Abington, she arrived at the field with a different feeling. A deeper appreciation. A new perspective.
It was unlike anything she had felt since starting to play in first grade.
"I figured out that this is what I’m living with. It’s temporary," said Borden, who plays club softball for Mass. Madness in Middleboro. "It's definitely impacting the season, but not as much as it could.”
“If (cancer) is going to happen to anybody, it happened to her, and it’s the wrong person to mess with," McDermott said.
Noons said that Borden took time during practices to train teammates how to play catcher in case she has to miss extended time due to treatments or recovery.
“She is the sweetest, kindest, most caring kid there ever was. You can’t help but love her," Noons said. "She has a positive attitude all the time and I think that’s what is getting her through this – her ability to see the good in everything.”
“She is an example of how young women should grow up to be. Strong, tough, kind and resilient," Noons said. "I think she’s paving the way for young softball players. She’s definitely someone to look up to.”
College softball awaits when Borden's time in a Titans uniform is through in June.
“It was definitely a big goal of mine," Borden said of playing in college. "I feel like with my new situation, I’m looking at everything a little bit differently. It’s just that I have the opportunity to continue my career and even people who play in high school don’t always get that. I’m very, very grateful for that.”
Upcoming community rally
The Pembroke High baseball and softball teams are putting on a fundraiser to benefit Borden's battle at the Matakesette Fields in town on Sunday, April 27 (time TBD).
Those who donate will have a chance to throw out -- as Borden does -- one of the teams' players as they attempt to steal a base. All proceeds will support Borden and her family.
“I just love her so much," sophomore Jaelyn Resil said of Borden. "Everyone’s behind her. She’s getting through this and she’s almost there.”
