Over the years, we have seen the fast food conglomerates have their own set of "chicken wars" and "chicken sandwich wars". But this place stands out, thanks to its fast casual type of dining. And now the popular food publication 'Love Food' is calling it this particular chicken sandwich on its menu the best chicken sandwich in Massachusetts.

What Massachusetts Eatery is Serving the Best Chicken Sandwich in the State?

Just a little west of Salem, MA, there is a town known as Lynnfield. That is where you can find this fast casual spot that is serving the best chicken sandwich in Massachusetts. It only seems fitting that "chicken" is also in the title of this unique eatery. It's called, The Chicken and the Pig, and it serves the best chicken sandwich in the Bay State, which is known as The Nashville Hot.

As someone who has been lucky enough to try this particular sandwich, I couldn't agree more. Not only is The Nashville Hot a great sandwich, but their entire chicken sandwich menu is incredible. Here's why 'Love Food' said they have the best chicken sandwich in all of Massachusetts:

SANDWICH — Accessory dwelling units and short-term rentals dominated the conversation during Monday's town meeting with voters battling over rules and regulations that could affect low-income families and business owners.

Despite significant debate, both accessory dwelling unit articles passed during the meeting, which was held at 7 p.m. at the Middle-High School.

Because of substantial disagreement on short term rental proposals, voters ultimately decided to indefinitely postpone any decisions.

About 350 people attended the meeting, adopting a $99.5 million town operating budget, despite concerns over school spending. Voters also approved plans for beach nourishment, even in the face of grumblings in the crowd.

Voters also came to grips over renovations to the historic Sandwich Town Hall which will cost roughly $2.4 million. The article, which passed, asked voters to approve $1.2 million of Community Preservation Act money for the project.

Plastic-related petitions failed, with residents putting a stop to a proposed nip bottle ban as well as a petition article that restricted restaurants from providing takeout utensils like condiment packets, napkins and straws.

Debate on accessory dwelling units, short-term rentals

Article 17 and Article 18 — both changing zoning bylaws for accessory dwelling units — were filed by the town to ensure that zoning bylaws are in compliance with the state Affordable Homes Act of 2024. Voters were concerned about unit square footage, state mandates, and affordable housing. Article 17 passed with 318 votes in favor and 57 opposed; and Article 18 passed with 324 votes and 50 opposed.

Article 19, another hot ticket item, on short-term rentals, prompted debate about parking spaces, septic, trash pick-up time limits, and maximum capacity for the number of residents per unit. Two amendments for the article were proposed, but ultimately residents voted to indefinitely postpone the article.

Should there be two town halls in Sandwich? Voters say yes.

Article 12 pertained to repairs and improvements to the historic, and older, Sandwich Town Hall at 130 Main St. According to Town Manager George "Bud" Dunham, who spoke during town meeting, the restoration will include window replacement, water infiltration mitigation, and treatment to the fully cedar shingled roof.

"It's extensive because historic buildings have to follow certain historical construction practices," Dunham said.

Bob King, a longtime resident and former restaurateur, spoke about the importance of the old town hall and said the structure is a force that drives the local economy. Town boards and committees still hold meetings at the building, he said, despite a new town hall at the corner of Route 6A and Tupper Road.

The old town hall is also home to the Sandwich Arts Alliance.

Built in 1834, it is believed to be one of the first town halls in Massachusetts, said King, and was constructed after the separation of church and state mandated new meeting spaces.

"Old town hall is the jewel in a crown of historic architecture," he said. "We need to continue to support the restoration. It's a no brainer."

James Dever, a member of the Finance Committee, spoke against the article as a town resident. There are other priorities the town should be focused on, he said, like the creation of ball fields and parks. History is important, he said, but at some point financial support to the older town hall needs to stop.

"I was an emphatic no on this vote. We are the only Cape Cod town supporting two town halls," he said. "When it comes to the use of resources, it's the wrong use of community resources."

Voters approved the article with 289 in favor and 110 opposed.

Voters double down and bet on plastic: nip bottle ban and takeout utensils

Debate on Article 20 became somewhat heated after town resident Dan Tanner presented petition Article 20. For Tanner, nip bottles encourage people to drive drunk, and can cause a substantial amount of litter on local roads.

Tanner, who called nips "a cynical industry," presented a similar petition article during town meeting in 2024. That petition also failed.

"Liquor store owners claim a nip ban will cost counter clerk jobs," said Tanner. "That is an acceptable price for someone else losing their life. Owners are putting profit over safety."

Town resident Chris Thompson's opposition to Tanner's petition caused the town moderator to remind voters to direct their comments and questions to the town — not the petitioners.

"This takes away someone's right to choose,' said Thompson. "Just be better people in general."

With 124 residents in favor of the article, and 194 against, voters shut the petition down.

'Skip the Stuff' petition on plastics

Voters were similarly riled up with Article 21, or the Skip the Stuff petition, presented by Jody Sastry and Karla Miller of the SurfRider Cape & Islands Foundation.

The article asked petitioners to vote to limit the distribution of takeout accessories for customers. The reason for the article, said Sastry, was because of the amount of plastic utensils, condiment packets, and straws that are found on area beaches. During a recent beach clean up, Sastry said the foundation collected roughly 22 pounds of trash comprised of takeout eating utensils.

Sastry called the article a "common sense" measure that would reduce costs to restaurants, give consumers a choice, and help keep beaches clean.

"This could lead to benefits for local businesses and communities as a whole," said Sastry.

At least one resident said such a move could lead to bad restaurant reviews.

Residents were also concerned that the measure could be overburdensome and unenforceable. Another speaker said the article "caused undue stress." The article was indefinitely postponed.

A fire at Captain Scott's Seafood Restaurant at 71 Tupper Road in Sandwich early Sunday morning, May 4, resulted in four-alarms, according to the fire chief.

Chief John Burke said a call to report white smoke coming from the back of the building came in at 5:27 a.m. and firefighters began arriving to the scene two minutes later.

They found fire in the back of the building and the basement. A working fire assignment was requested to bring in resources from Bourne Fire Department.

The building was empty at the time of the fire. Burke said the cause is not believed to be suspicious.

Crews backed out of the building when they noticed the floor on the first floor become unsteady, according to a press release.

A second alarm fire assignment was then requested to bring in more help from Joint Base Fire Department, Plymouth Fire, Cotuit Fire, Barnstable and West Barnstable Fire.

While extinguishing from outside, Sandwich firefighters noticed the natural gas regulator for the building had burned off, causing a subsequent gas leak inside. Burke noted that National Grid then had to come to shut the gas off underground.

Crews from surrounding towns assist

A third alarm was requested to bring in units from Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire and Onset Fire District, followed by a fourth alarm around 11:30 a.m. to bring in resources from Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire again and Hyannis Fire Department.

The fire was extinguished with the help of an excavator to peel apart the building provided by Pastore Excavation. The fire was declared out at 12:30 p.m.

Providence Canteen provided drinks and coffee to firefighters. The State Fire Marshal’s Special Operations Rehab Truck was also on hand to support firefighter rehab.

One firefighter was treated and released on scene for heat exhaustion.

Burke estimated that damages could be $1 million or more.

The State Fire Marshal will investigate the cause with Sandwich fire investigators, according to the chief.

According to the website, Captain Scott's has been at its Tupper Road location for over 50 years. In 1989, the Gossios family took over the fried seafood restaurant and "immediately began the transformation into a restaurant that only uses the freshest seafood available," reads the site.

The property is owned by V & G Realty Trust, according to Sandwich assessor's records.
