The drive feels solid and well-constructed, and the 12-layer PCB construction is evident in its slightly thicker profile compared to older generation drives.
Surprisingly, you won’t find any heatsink here.
Installation is straightforward if your motherboard supports PCIe 5.0, though the drive maintains backward compatibility with Gen3 and Gen4 systems – albeit at reduced speeds.
Performance That Actually Matters
Let’s address the elephant in the room: those headline speeds of 14,800/14,000MB/s are genuinely impressive, but they only tell part of the story. In real-world usage, the difference between a high-end Gen4 drive and this Gen5 monster isn’t always as dramatic as the numbers suggest.
Where the Renegade G5 truly shines is in sustained workloads. Video editing projects with 4K and 8K footage benefit significantly from the extra bandwidth, with noticeably faster project loading times and smoother scrubbing through timeline previews.
Gaming performance is where things get interesting. Game loading times are undoubtedly faster, but the improvements over a quality Gen4 drive are more incremental than revolutionary. So even when the read speed is double on paper compared to your older Gen4 NVMe SSD, say, that doesn’t mean you’ll see your game loads twice as fast. Just trying to manage your expectations here.
The real benefit comes with DirectStorage-enabled games and future titles that will leverage the full potential of Gen5 speeds. As game assets become larger and more detailed, having this bandwidth headroom will become increasingly valuable. You probably want to check whether your games support DirectStorage but I’m sure this will be fully adopted to lots of games in the near future.

The Silicon Motion SM2508 controller, built on 6nm lithography, runs significantly cooler than previous generations while delivering better performance. And I was pretty surprised to find that the unit doesn’t come with a heatsink. But even more surprising is how good the performance is even without one!
The low-power DDR4 DRAM cache is another smart engineering choice. It reduces power consumption while maintaining excellent performance characteristics, and I noticed the drive stayed cooler during extended workloads compared to some competing Gen5 solutions I’ve tested. Using HWMonitor, I can see that the drive runs around 50 degrees on idle and up to 80 degrees maximum on heavy load like running my CrystalDisk Benchmark.
I even tried running the benchmark a few times and in some drives, I’d usually hit the thermal throttling after the second or third consecutive benchmark runs. The drive is still solidly giving me blazing fast speeds.
The independent Buck IC for consistent power draw is particularly noteworthy. This ensures stable performance even under varying system loads, which becomes important when you’re pushing the drive to its limits during intensive tasks.
Obviously, it would even be better if your motherboard has a built-in heatsink like mine to make sure you’ll never get throttled on performance.
File transfer operations are incredibly fast, with large video files and game installations completing in impressively short timeframes. The drive handled simultaneous read/write operations without significant performance degradation, which is crucial for content creators working with large media files.

The company was founded in Milford, Massachusetts, in 2006 by David Breen, who remains its CEO. The Kingston location opened in 2016 and featured a variety of dining and entertainment activities such as bowling, laser tag, roller skating, arcades and ax throwing.
The entertainment and activities venue closed without notice on Tuesday, May 13, social media posts from now-former employees and others affected by the abrupt move said.

There has been no response yet to a May 14 Patriot Ledger email sent to Pinz.
The company's separation notice to employees was posted to Facebook by a former worker. In it, management said Kingston faced the same challenges as the company's handful of other closed mall locations,
"We have encountered increasing challenges, declining foot traffic, store closures, mall foreclosures and rising costs," the notice said.
Pinz Entertainment Group had around a half dozen locations at its peak in Massachusetts, New York and New Hampshire.
With Kingston's closure, the company's only remaining businesses are in Milford; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; and South Carolina. The latter is a separate concept business called MIX.
Issues specific to Kingston Collection didn't help
The mall has been struggling financially for years despite various rebranding efforts and ownership changes.

Sears, one of the mall's main anchors, closed and was demolished in 2021 to make way for high-end apartments in 2022. The apartments have opened and currently have tenants. Macy's, the other anchor has also since closed.
The mall's current owner is Florida-based Second Horizon Capital, which purchased the mall in 2023. The investment firm says on its website that it works to develop underutilized commercial properties like the Kingston Collection into "vibrant destinations and local economic engines."
What those plans may ultimately look like is unclear, although Pinz management hinted at potential physical changes to the property in its notice to employees.
"(T)he uncertainty surrounding Kingston Collection's redevelopment and the extended construction timeline made it impossible to reach an agreement," it said.

KINGSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Kingston Carnival is back in Massachusetts, so that can only mean one thing — spring has arrived.
"It's pretty awesome. I mean I've been doing it for five years, so I have to like it in order to keep coming back," says Jennifer from Nashua.
She works on the grill, cooking everything from burgers to hot dogs, and looks forward to working at her station every year.
"You go from town to town, you see new things, you see new people."
She loves working so much, she encourages people to apply to join for the experience.
"I suggest people try it at least once. Even if you don't want to do it for life, you should do it one time."
Kingston Carnival, organized by Fiesta Shows, prides itself on being committed to creating a safe and wholesome environment for its customers and workers. Fiesta Shows is responsible for several fairs in the area including the Auburn Mall Carnival, Bolton, Marshfield, and Woodstock Fair. With a retention rate of over 90% for their ride operators, Bob at concessions thinks the results of their annual events speak for themselves.
"It's a part of the Americana," says Bob. "The more memories are made...Families bring their children and in turn, those children bring their children as time goes on."
Patrons can look forward to food and fun for $5 admission per person. Children 12 and under can enter for free. For unlimited rides, attendees can purchase a wristband or a "Megapass." The carnival, which ends Sunday, May 11, is being hosted at the Kingston Collection in the Macy's parking lot.

Macy's confirmed Thursday that it would be closing 66 of its stores around the country, including one here in Massachusetts.
The company said the move "is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth which includes closing approximately 150 underproductive stores over a three-year period."
Locations across the country, including several in California, Florida and New York, will be part of the slate of closings. Here in Massachusetts, the only location set to close is in Kingston.
A company spokesperson previously confirmed to The Patriot Ledger in October that the Kingston store would close in early 2025. The site was sold to Florida-based Second Horizon Capital that month.
Which Macy's stores are closing in MA?
As part of Thursday's announcement, Macy's confirmed its location in Kingston will close. However, none of its other Massachusetts locations are included in the list of closings so far.
The exact date of the store's closure hasn't yet been announced, but Macy's said a majority of the stores included in this round of closures will shutter during the first quarter of 2025, which is until the end of March.
When will Macy's start clearance sales at closing stores?
Macy's said clearance sales at closing stores, including the Kingston location, will begin in January and run for approximately eight to 12 weeks.
Macy's Backstage stores and Macy's Furniture Galleries that are included in the closings will have clearance sales for approximately six weeks beginning in February.
