FINALISTS: John Buckey, Ed.D. Currently the Interim High School Principal for Hingham Public Schools in Hingham, MA, Dr. Buckey previously served as Superintendent of Schools for Marblehead Public Schools from 2020–2023. Prior to this role, he served as Principal of Nantucket High School from 2008–2020 and as Principal and Assistant Principal at Littleton High School from 2001–2008. He began his career as a Spanish teacher and foreign language department coordinator at The Lexington School in Lexington, KY. Dr. Buckey holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration and Organizational Leadership from Northeastern University (Boston, MA), a Master of Education in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education (Cambridge, MA), post-baccalaureate studies in Educational Administration from the University of Kentucky (Lexington, KY), and Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Spanish and Secondary Education from Asbury College (Wilmore, KY). Hilary Filkins Currently the Assistant Principal at Stoughton High School in Stoughton, MA, Ms. Filkins previously served as Upper School Interim Principal and Dean of Teaching and Learning at Atlantis Charter School in Fall River, MA, and as Humanities Department Chair at Talbot Middle School in Fall River, MA. She began her career as an English teacher at Brockton High School, where she taught from 2005–2020. Ms. Filkins holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing from the University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ) and a Master’s degree in Teaching from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (Dartmouth, MA). She is a Principal Fellow with the Boston College Lynch Leadership Academy (Boston, MA) and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational and Organizational Leadership at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA). Ms. Filkins holds Massachusetts professional licensure in English (8–12), Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent (All Levels), Supervisory Core ELA (6–8), and Principal/Assistant Principal (5–12), along with Sheltered English Immersion endorsements for both teacher and administrator roles.

Sean T. Woodard-McNiff, J.D. Currently the Principal of Knox Trail Middle School in Spencer, MA, Mr. Woodard-McNiff previously served as Principal of Normandin Middle School in New Bedford, MA; Upper School Principal at New Bedford High School in New Bedford, MA; Principal of South Hadley High School in South Hadley, MA; Assistant Principal and Acting Principal at Marblehead High School in Marblehead, MA; and Assistant Principal at Lowell Catholic High School in Lowell, MA. He began his career as an English teacher at Fitchburg High School in Fitchburg, MA. Mr. Woodard-McNiff holds a Juris Doctor from New England School of Law (Boston, MA) and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from Fitchburg State College (Fitchburg, MA). He is licensed as a K–12 Principal in Massachusetts and has participated in the Harvard School Turnaround Leadership Academy and the Boston College Lynch Leadership Group.

Concerns over heavy snow on the roof of Plymouth River Elementary School in Hingham, Massachusetts, forced students and staff to transfer to the high school after officials noticed signs of structural stress on Thursday.

"The building inspectors probably know they're getting close to their weight limits," said Andrew Spalt, the owner of Total Tree Care. He says evacuating the school was the right decision.

Some towns on the South Shore got more than 30 inches of snow during Monday's blizzard.

"If the roof fails, that can be catastrophic," Spalt said.

Spalt understands the risks heavy snow brings because for 40 years, he's built a business removing it.

"Especially with a flat roof, that snow is just going to sit and sit," he explained.

He says even what looks like a small amount of snow can quickly add up and become overwhelming.

"If you have one inch over 100 square feet, you're probably talking 3,000 to 5,000 pounds of weight," he explained. "So, it can get astronomical, and it definitely could be catastrophic if it fell through."

In a worst-case scenario the Spalt said, "With kids underneath, it would be like an avalanche with lumber and debris on top."

To prevent a collapse like the one earlier this week at the vacant former Sacred Heart High School in Kingston, officials say Hingham's facilities team and roofing specialists are working quickly to clear the roof.

Families are being asked to watch for updates as snow removal continues. The superintendent says more information will be shared as it becomes available.

Just days before the Super Bowl, signs of support for New England's hometown team are hard to miss across Massachusetts.

Ice paintings in Weymouth and road safety signs above the highways are showcasing Patriots pride. Even more permanent displays, street names, are taking on new meaning during football season.

130 "Patriots" roads in Massachusetts

According to a review of Massachusetts roadway data, about 130 roads in the state bear the Patriots name.

Many of those streets are located in areas tied to the state's revolutionary history. In Lexington, for example, Patriots Drive sits just a block from the historic Battle Green.

A drive down the South Shore to Hingham leads to Patriots Way, where residents have turned their address into a tradition.

"What started as just a fun idea has really turned into a tradition for us," said Sarah Joseph.

Since the team's Super Bowl run in 2017, parents and dozens of neighborhood kids have gathered each year for a group photo celebrating their fandom.

"We started at the bottom of Patriots Way of course in front of the Patriots Way sign... getting all of the kids together, of all age groups in their Patriots gear," said Lindsay Nolan, whose daughter, now a senior in high school, was part of that first photo.

"It has been a while [since the pats were in the Super Bowl], so I'm super excited that the younger generation can experience it and I'm definitely looking forward to getting together again with some of my neighbors this Sunday," Olivia Nolan said.

Around the neighborhood, the street name has become a point of pride, especially during years of success for New England.

"A few times people have stopped and said, wow, that's pretty amazing. You live on Patriots Way," added Joseph.

Now, a new generation of fans is showing the impact a resurgent season like this one can mean, whether they live on the Patriots Way or have always believed in it.

After a few years of very few significant snow storms on the South Shore, the streak ends this weekend.

This sprawling storm is impacting a huge swath of the country, which is why it’s getting so much attention, but for us in New England this will be a standard snow storm. The real crippling impacts will be across the south, where the infrastructure will be overwhelmed trying to deal with snow and ice.

Timing: The snow will start on the South Shore by midday Sunday. It will start light, but becomes heaviest late afternoon into Sunday night.

The heaviest snow is done by Monday morning, but light snow continues off and on during much of the day.

Totals: Much of the South Shore will end up with around a foot of snow. Sure, some spots will pick up a bit more, but at that point the difference between a few inches becomes less significant.

Monday will likely be a snow day for most students, and if you can work from home you should. The heaviest snow will be over, but with light snow continuing there will be plenty of clean up to be done.

The Type of Snow: Initially the snow will be fluffy, but overnight Sunday and Monday the snow will become a bit heavier as temperatures rise closer to freezing. As cold air rushes in on Monday, the snow will end on the fluffy side again.

Winds: Gusts won’t be tremendously impressive with this storm–in the 30-50 MPH range–so widespread outages are not expected.

The Cold: Once the snow ends, don’t expect it to melt any time soon. Much of next week looks very cold.
