The Hingham-owned and operated LOOP Shuttle service will launch in mid-July, offering an app-based safe, reliable, and fun transportation alternative for busy families with kids ages 8-17 to multiple destinations – sports practices and games, camp drop-off, after-school and other activities, social events, weekend tournaments, and more during the daytime or evening. On-demand door-to-door service – and soon, recurring scheduled rides – can be arranged through the app. In the meantime, recurring rides can be ordered through a member of the Hingham-based Loop team.

Co-founders, Dave Dressler, Judd Hoffman, and Shawn Brundage have been joined by Klein, Julie Hoffman, Doris McCann, and Charles Veysey. Operations manager and LOOP shuttle driver Doris McCann – a retired popular Hingham Public Schools bus driver –is a familiar face for many Hingham families. She is responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training the drivers.

Transportation will be provided in 12- and 15-seat Mercedes Sprinter vans – “safe, high-quality vehicles with plenty of room for sports equipment and other gear,” according to Klein.

A successful test run was completed June 21, with more to come. “The children who were part of this really enjoyed the experience,” Klein said. “We’re thinking about ways to enhance the rides to make them more fun – such as lights or music. We want riding in a LOOP van to be safe and fun for kids from start to finish so that their parents feel comfortable with the program.”

The goal is to have four vans up and running this summer. For the time being, LOOP will remain Hingham-based – including the riders and destinations. “However, we are already planning to drive to neighboring towns, places such as Nantasket Beach, fields at Union Point in Weymouth and Starland in Hanover, which offers many children’s programs and activities,” Klein explained.

It’s an easy-to-use app. Parents or caregivers set up a family profile including their children’s names and the names of their kids’ friends. This enables parents – and older children with their permission – to schedule rides for family members and friends included in the profile.

Parents are notified whenever their children schedule a ride and when they get picked up and dropped off.

Young children who don’t have cell phones – whose parents schedule rides through the app – are assigned a PIN number to give to the driver “to ensure the right child is driven to the right location, so extra safety features are built into the program,” Klein said.

The rides are available from numerous locations to a variety of destinations – home, a friend’s house, the library, and the Hingham Shipyard, among many other options. Payment is made by credit card through the app.

Klein noted that team members can travel to events together rather than in separate cars “and socialize on the way to and from their destination.”

There’s already positive feedback about that LOOP by word of mouth and a few Instagram (loop_shuttle) posts. “So far, it’s been a positive experience,” Klein shared.

The idea is to prove the LOOP model in Hingham during the first year and then to think about expansion strategies such as a franchise model for similar communities “to make the LOOP program their own using our technology,” according to Klein.

HINGHAM, MA — A longtime Massachusetts-based donut chain has officially expanded to the South Shore and is offering free goods to celebrate its opening.

Union Square Donuts debuted its latest location at Derby Street Shops in Hingham on Wednesday. The donut shop, which got its start in Somerville, is known for its fresh dough and variety of glazes, jams and toppings.

The Derby Street location will offer a mix of favorites and new creations, including Brown Butter Hazelnut, Honey Glazed, Sea Salt Whiskey Caramel and Boston Cream, along with vegan options.

The shop will also serve drip coffee, cold brew, espresso drinks, lattes, matcha, and seasonal specialty drinks.

Union Square Donuts is hosting grand-opening festivities from Friday, Sept. 11 through Sunday, Sept. 13.Throughout the weekend, each in-shop purchase will come with a Union Square Donuts scratch ticket, and every ticket is a winner.
