Granite Countertops in Yarmouth, MA: The Natural Choice for Durability and Versatility
Granite is one of the most popular natural stones in the market. As an igneous rock, the granite you're considering was once molten. It was formed as it cooled inside the earth. It is quarried from the mountains of Italy, the U.S., India, Brazil, China, and dozens of other countries around the world. Here at Granite World, we are passionate about this high-quality natural stone and recommend it for a variety of installation purposes, such as kitchen countertops, floors, and other surfaces that undergo heavy usage.
Minerals within the granite look like flecks and are what give it the classic "salt and pepper" look. Other types have veining similar to marble. Generally speaking, granite is a dense-grained, hard stone that can be highly polished or finished in a variety of ways depending on your family's needs. A broad spectrum of colors is available to match the color palette and feel of your home.

What Makes Granite Counters So Popular?
Granite is a highly durable and attractive option for kitchen countertops, floors, table tops, and exterior applications like cladding and curbing. It is available in a range of colors and has been rated as the best overall performer among kitchen countertop materials by a leading consumer magazine.
Unlike synthetic surfaces, granite is incredibly resistant to scratches and heat damage. It is also highly resistant to bacteria and does not get affected by substances like citric acid, coffee, tea, alcohol, or wine. Even with regular use, granite does not stain easily and is almost impossible to scratch. If you want to enhance your granite's resistance to staining, our team can provide you with more information about sealants available on the market.

Granite World Pro Tip
When it comes to granite countertops, high-end options often equate to unique patterns and enhanced durability. However, a higher price doesn't always guarantee better quality. At Granite World Inc., we provide raw materials from the top distributors available. Visit our showroom in Harwich, Massachusetts, and consult with one of our associates to find a granite that fits your needs and budget.
3 Timeless Ways to Complement Your Granite Countertops in Yarmouth, MA
If you are looking to add a touch of elegance to your kitchen, granite countertops can be a great option. With their intricate patterns and wide range of colors, they can transform a bland cooking space into a bright and merry room. However, since granite counters often steal the proverbial show, it can be tricky to design your kitchen around them.
Keep these easy design tips from the Granite World team in mind once you settle on the color and application of your granite counters:

1. Granite Countertop Decor
Keeping your kitchen looking tidy and organized requires avoiding cluttering your countertops with too many items and decorations. However, you can still enhance the look of your kitchen by adding a few carefully selected decorative items. If your granite countertops have specks of bright colors like green or purple, you can try using appliances, flowers, or decorations in those colors to make the specks in your countertops stand out. This will add a pop of color to your kitchen and elevate its overall appearance.

2. Cabinet Color
Brown, tan, and gray hues are all very popular color choices for granite kitchen countertops. As such, it's wise to choose a cabinet color that complements the natural tones of your countertops. That way, you can avoid creating an overwhelming look in your space. A warm white or a deep, moody color can be used to highlight the beauty of the countertops. If you prefer stained cabinets, pick a shade that matches the colors of your countertops.

3. Floor Pattern
Having a bold pattern on both your countertops and your floors can make your kitchen look cluttered and overwhelming. If you have granite kitchen countertops, it's a good idea to opt for a simple floor design. Choosing a plain tile or wood floor is usually a safe and practical choice.
Quartz Countertops: Elegant Design and Easy Maintenance
Quartz is a type of igneous rock that is made up of oxygen and silicon atoms in a continuous structure of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra (SiO4). It is one of the most abundant minerals on the planet and has been used in the production of kitchen and bathroom countertops for many years. Much like granite countertops in Yarmouth, MA quartz is an excellent option as it is highly durable and requires minimal maintenance.
Why Do Homeowners in Massachusetts Love Quartz Kitchen Counters?
When it comes to stone choices for your kitchen countertops, quartz ranks among the best choices available. But why? Let's find out.

Beauty
Quartz countertops have become increasingly popular in kitchens, and for good reason. They are designed to imitate the everlasting beauty of natural stone, providing a wide range of captivating colors and patterns. Whether you prefer the sophistication of marble or the simplicity of solid colors, quartz offers endless options to match your preferences. With professional installation services from Granite World Inc., quartz kitchen countertops can effortlessly enhance the visual appeal of any room.

Durability
As a homeowner, you're probably aware of how quickly kitchen countertops can get worn out. Luckily, quartz is a material that can withstand the daily rigors of wear and tear – even if you have kids. That's because quartz is a unique blend of natural quartz crystals, resins, and pigments, making it a highly durable surface. With quartz countertops, you don't have to worry endlessly about scratches or stains ruining the beauty of your kitchen. It is a highly resistant material, making it an ideal choice for busy kitchens and bathrooms that see a lot of activity. In fact, its scratch, stain, and heat-resistant properties make it perfect for everyday use.

Easy Maintenance
It can be frustrating to spend your weekends cleaning and maintaining your countertops. However, by choosing quartz countertops, you can eliminate one task from your to-do list. Quartz surfaces are non-absorbent, meaning that liquids won't seep in, and bacteria won't be able to breed. If there are spills, cleaning them up is as easy as wiping the surface down with a mild detergent and water. There's no need to spend hours scrubbing, buffing, or polishing. As an added bonus, you won't have to worry about sealing your countertops regularly, as you would with granite or marble.
Granite World Pro Tip: Is quartz tough? Yes. Is it indestructible? Unfortunately, it is not. Quartz is a surface that can be damaged permanently by exposure to strong chemicals and solvents that can weaken its physical properties. You should avoid using products that contain trichloroethane or methylene chloride, such as paint removers or strippers. Also, stay away from any highly aggressive cleaning agents like oven or grill cleaners that have high alkaline and PH levels.

In Cape Cod and the Islands restaurant news this week, The Piccadilly in South Yarmouth opens for dinner starting May 16 for the first time in decades, Nantucket gets a new bakery and there’s a new pickle store in Mashpee Commons.
If you have a gift card to Capt. Scott’s in Sandwich, which was damaged in a May 4 fire, you can redeem the gift certificate at Sandwich Taverna, owners said in a Facebook note, 290 Route130, Forestdale, 508-888-2200. Visit thesandwichtaverna.com for menu and hours.
In case you missed it, restaurant news last week unfolded fast and furious: After weeks of speculation, The Daily Brew’s owner Kathryn Hickey announced she had purchased Silver Lounge in North Falmouth and that May 11 was the busy coffee shop’s last day in Cataumet. Then, The Daily Brew owner posted a Facebook note letting the public know that she was selling off much of the decor in a two-day sale at the iconic 87-year-old Silver Lounge. People were lined up for the 9 a.m. start on Friday.
Also last week, the self-serve wine bar in Mashpee Commons, Uva, opened a boutique next door so customers can buy the wines they like from the tasting bar. And, noodle fans, Ukiyo Cape Cod, a ramen shop, opened in Brewster at the site of the former Fare & Just Kitchen.
OK, let’s get this week’s restaurant news on the grill.
The Piccadilly in South Yarmouth opens pop-up burger bar
The Piccadilly, 1105 Route 28, South Yarmouth, has a new streamlined name (formerly The Piccadilly Deli & Pub) and new decor: The clowns and circus theme are gone. In their place is a 30-foot octopus that Sandwich artist Lauren Miller was hired to paint on one wall.
“I come from the seafood game. We own Osterville Fish and Osterville Fish Too in Barnstable Village near Mattakeese Wharf. We also own Clambakes, Etc., which is a catering company out of Sandwich,” said Sam Monroe, operations manager for the Barnstable Hospitality Group, which bought The Piccadilly last May and is just now introducing some changes.
The biggest change is that starting Friday The Piccadilly will be open 4 to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays with what managers are calling “Tubby’s Pop Up Burger Bar.” Chef Richardo Williams came up with the idea that will feature smash burgers made with grass-fed, humanely raised beef, hand-cut French fries, a few craft cocktails and a variety of local beers.
The Piccadilly will continue to be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, serving breakfast and lunch, including the popular “Dilly Double,” which has pancakes, two eggs bacon and sausage for $12.50. Find them at thepiccadilly.net or 508-394-9018.
New bakery opens on Nantucket
Nantucket's newest bakery, at The Faraway Nantucket Hotel, is called Cymbals Cafe.
It’s all about the small-batch housemade doughnuts and Partners Coffee (yes, they have espresso drinks) served to go or in Faraway Nantucket’s courtyard. Named after an old New England word for pastry, Cymbals, 29 Centre St., is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 8 a.m. until noon, “but come early: once the donuts sell out, they're gone for the day,” according to publicity for the bakery.
The bakery's phone number is 508-203-6889.
The Pretentious Pickle moves from Plymouth to Mashpee
The Pretentious Pickle, “purveyor of all things pickled,” has moved from Plymouth to Mashpee Commons, where a grand opening was held May 10. The store’s commercial kitchen remains in Pembroke.
The boutique food market, founded by Pembroke resident Lorraine Connell, gives “pickled products the respect they deserve,” according to publicity materials for the store. Connell started the business selling at farmers markets in 2016.
“Connell’s passion for pickling came from her father, who grew up in a family of 14 brothers and sisters in Maine, and his mother, Ola, who canned food to sustain the family through the winter. Today, Connell’s products remain rooted in the same tried-and-true traditions and recipes,” according to an announcement of the store’s opening.
The Pretentious Pickle sells everything from classic dill pickles and sweet bread-and-butter pickles, to pickled vegetables including carrots, okra and jalapenos. Pickle connoisseurs will find some unusual fare: pickle popcorn, lip balm, cotton candy and vinaigrette. For a full list of products, visit pretentiouspickle.com/, And, by the way, that lip balm flavor is dill pickled, not sweet!
The Pretentious Pickle is at 16 North St., Mashpee Commons, 774-564-8381, pretentiouspickle.com.

After a massive fin whale washed up on a sandbar near Great Island in West Yarmouth, biologists from the International Fund for Animal Welfare on Cape Cod are investigating the cause of death, while officials figure out how to handle the whale’s remains.
The whale, a female estimated to weigh 80,000 to 100,000 pounds and measuring 65 feet — about five feet longer than a standard bowling lane — was found on private property on May 8, IFAW spokeswoman Stacey Hedman confirmed.
Early on May 9, she said, "IFAW performed a limited examination of the whale and collected some samples, which may help us learn more about this whale."
An update call with NOAA Fisheries is scheduled for May 13, Hedman added. Officials will share any new findings as they become available.
Yarmouth Natural Resources Director David Condon issued an advisory on May 12 outlining the town’s response to the stranding, noting that town officials immediately contacted IFAW after receiving the report of the stranding.
"The town of Yarmouth is working with federal, state and local partners to identify the best way to dispose of the whale in accordance with federal requirements," the advisory said.
Condon noted the whale is on private property and emphasized that "members of the public should not attempt to access the site to view the animal."
Fin whales are the second-largest species of whale after blue whales, which are the largest animals alive on the planet today. According to NOAA, fin whales are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, and depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which protects the whales throughout their range.
IFAW reminds the public that all dolphins, porpoises, and whales are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which makes touching, feeding, or otherwise harming the animals illegal. The best way to assist these animals is by calling trained responders and maintaining a 150-foot distance.
Reports in the Northeast can be directed to NOAA’s stranding hotline at 866-755-6622. On Cape Cod, the public should call IFAW directly at 508-743-9548.

In this week’s Cape Cod restaurant news, visit a new pizza place in Yarmouth Port, learn about the budget-friendly “Wine Down Wednesdays” promotion in Sagamore and see what James Beard Award-winning chef Sherry Pocknett is doing back in Mashpee.
In case you missed it from last week, a new eatery, Amilia Taqueria, opened in the former Wolfie’s Bakery in Hyannis and a 200-seat Brazilian restaurant is slated for the former Outback Steakhouse at Festival Plaza in Hyannis.
Also, in a nod to March Madness, we are squaring off 16 waterfront restaurants so you can vote for your favorites. Our list this time looks at independent, rather than resort-based, restaurants. We live in a region where the most common summer question is "Where can I eat on the water?”
This list of 16, which will publish Friday online, can do double-duty as a guide.
Cape Cod pizza maker opens new shop in Yarmouth Port
Longtime Cape Cod pizza entrepreneur Scott Lopes has turned up the heat and halved the cooking time to produce Roman-style thin-crust pies at his new Cape Flats Pizza in Yarmouth Port.
“I sold Stone L’Oven in Falmouth, but I kept the trademark. The pizza there was more New York-style. It was bigger, 16 inches, and had a puffy crust,” Lopes said.
At Cape Flats, named for the tidal flats in Brewster and Dennis, pizzas cook in four minutes, about half the time it took to cook New York-style pies.
“Pizza at the new place has no bubbles in it,” Lopes said. “They are 14-inch pizzas with a charred crust that cooks at 800 degrees.
"People are telling me it reminds them of New Haven-style pizza."
Lopes said the Roman-style pizza cooks in an electric oven from Italy, where electric is the preferred pizza cooking method.
In addition to being smaller and perfectly flat, Cape Flats Pizza offers a variation on traditional toppings. The Hawaiian, which normally has canned pineapple and ham, is The Luau at Cape Flats.
“It has fresh pineapple that’s been caramelized and, instead of ham, we do prosciutto,” Lopes said.
The 14-inch, or large, Luau is $22. Prices for cheese pizza are $13 for a 10-inch and $18 for the large 14-inch.
Cape Flats Pizza is at 559 Route 6A in Yarmouth Port, which was previously the Yarmouth location of Pizza by Evan. Cape Flats Pizza, which opened Feb. 11, opens at 11 a.m. daily.
Lopes owned three locations of Stone L’Oven – Falmouth, Canton and Newton – for more than a decade. You may also know Lopes from his first pizzeria, The Pizza Wave, in Marstons Mills.
Lopes describes the new location as “an upscale pizza cafe,” which does a lot of takeout pizza, but also sits 35 inside and twice that when the outside opens in warmer weather.
“We have a nice bar with all local IPAs at a bar made with reclaimed wood from Cataumet Saw Mill,” Lopes said.
Cape Flats offers a dozen pizza specialties like “The Riptide” with chicken, bacon jam, cheddar, mozzarella, roasted cherry tomatoes, roasted garlic aioli and arugula or “The Ocean’s Harvest” (that one has scallops.) The shop also sells fresh, never-frozen Angus beef smash burgers, salads and Snowy Owl coffee.

Sherry Pocknett returns to Cape Cod
James Beard Award-winning Wampanoag chef Sherry Pocknett is back in Mashpee.
Her Rhode Island restaurant Sly Fox Den, Too, closed, but she's looking for opportunities on Cape Cod while she works on opening her 200-seat restaurant in Preston, Connecticut. That could be anything from teaching indigenous Wampanoag cooking to open an eatery in Mashpee, she said.
“Or if any restaurant wants to do a pop-up, that would be fun,” said Pocknett, who was named Best Chef in the Northeast last year partly for her efforts to preserve Indigenous foods ― including Indian fry bread and venison sausage ―– she was serving at Sly Fox Den Too.
Pocknett, who has been on television shows like Gordon Ramsey's "Hell's Kitchen," — as a guest judge — will also make another TV appearance in May, for Food Network's "Somebody Feed Phil."
The Sagamore: Dinner for 2, bottle of wine, $50 on Wednesdays
From 4 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday, The Sagamore — the newly branded Sagamore Inn — is curating a wine dinner at $50 per couple. Each person selects a garden or Caesar salad and chooses from one of three entrees – last week featured linguine with white clam sauce, baked Caprese chicken with arugula pesto or beef burgundy – and then the couple chooses a bottle to split from that week’s list of wines. The special is weekly on “Wine Down Wednesdays” through May 28. Restaurant owners recommend a reservation, available by calling 508-888-9707.
